A powerful, visually stunning tribute to the land, culture, and spirit of the Dene people.
Denendeh: A Dene Celebration is an evocative portrait of the Dene homeland—Denendeh—spanning the vast subarctic expanse of the Northwest Territories. Created through a close collaboration between renowned photographer René Fumoleau and the Dene Nation, this landmark volume blends intimate documentary photography with the authentic voices of Dene Elders, community leaders, and youth.
Through vivid imagery and poignant oral testimony, the book captures the rhythms of traditional life on the land: seasonal hunting and fishing, the warmth of gatherings, drum dances, spiritual connections, and the enduring resilience of communities navigating profound social and political shifts. Fumoleau’s compassionate lens avoids romanticized clichés, offering instead an honest, deeply human record of a sovereign people asserting their identity, rights, and vision for the future.
